Summary

Baltic rush (Juncus balticus) is a strongly rhizomatous perennial with erect, terete stems 15–90 cm tall, often forming tufts or clonal colonies; leaves are mainly basal with bladeless sheaths, and the inflorescence is a panicle of spikelets with a main bract that appears like an extension of the stem. Flowers have brown to purple tepals and six stamens, and fruits are capsules 3–4 mm long. It grows in wet mineral soils of meadows, low areas in grasslands, thickets, and along streams and ditches, tolerating saline and alkaline conditions; favors full sun to part shade and wet to moist soils. Baltic rush propagates by rhizomes, forming clonal colonies, and is hardy in USDA zones 3–10; it is used for erosion control, habitat, and restoration, with nitrogen fixation enriching soils, though it can spread aggressively when planted outside native range.
