Summary

An evergreen tropical tree reaching 10–30 m in height with a trunk diameter up to 48 cm, it has alternate, simple leaves that are elliptic to oblong; the upper surface is glabrous and the densely golden-yellow pubescent underside features leaf bases that are often cordate. Axillary unisexual flowers indicate dioecy, and fruits are dehiscent, three-lobed capsules about 9–11 mm long, turning reddish-purple at maturity. Native to tropical Asia and northern Australia, it ranges from Bangladesh and India eastward through Indo-China and Malesia to Queensland, typically occupying wet tropical habitats on sandy, clay, or limestone soils, often along alluvial sites, hillsides or ridges.

In cultivation, it tolerates wet tropical conditions and can occur from understory to mid-canopy. Its ornamental value and local wood applications are practical considerations. Toxicity information is limited. It is pollinated by insects, with flies among likely visitors, and seed dispersal is primarily by gravity. Roots form arbuscular mycorrhizal associations, supporting nutrient uptake in tropical soils. Uses are mainly ornamental or for local wood products.
