Summary

Apache Plume is a durable, semi-evergreen shrub native to the southwestern United States and parts of northern Mexico. It grows as a slender, multi-branched plant typically 3–6 ft tall and about 4 ft wide, with pale wheat-colored branches and olive green, lobed leaves. White five-petaled flowers appear on branch ends, followed by distinctive feathery pink seed plumes that persist and create visual interest. Underground rhizomes can form dense thickets, and the plant attracts pollinators while providing wildlife cover.

In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, with very low to low water needs once established, making it well suited for drought-tolerant landscapes and erosion-control plantings. It is fast-growing and low-maintenance, used ornamentally in meadows, shrub borders, parking strips, and slopes; propagation is by seed, and it can spread via underground rhizomes in some sites.
