Summary

An Asia-native woody climbing liana with forked tendrils, it has simple cordate leaves with blades 9–24 cm long and 8–20 cm wide, irregularly toothed or undulate margins; the adaxial leaf surface is sparsely pubescent when young and glabrescent later, with 5–7 basal veins and 4–5 lateral veins. Inflorescences are compound umbels, terminal or leaf-opposed, with peduncles 1.5–3.5 cm and pedicels 2–6 mm; buds 2–3 mm, petals oval 1.7–2.7 mm, and a four-lobed disk; ovary adnate to the disk with a conical style and slightly expanded stigma. Berries are 6–8 mm, 1-seeded, with slightly raised ridges on the seed; flowers Apr–May; fruiting May–Jun. Habitat: forests, shrublands and grassy areas at 500–1000 m; distribution includes Hainan, Sichuan and Yunnan (also Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand).

Cultivation and practical notes reflect a montane to subtropical origin, with a scandent growth form and forked tendrils appropriate for climbers; altitude range 500–1000 m indicates preference for mid-elevation habitats across a broad Asian distribution.
