Summary
Whitethorn acacia is a drought-, cold-, and heat-tolerant native shrub to small tree of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It forms a dense, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree up to about 15 feet tall with paired white spines at leaf bases and even-pinnate leaves bearing small leaflets; flowers are fragrant bright yellow in dense globose heads at leaf axils in spring to early summer, followed by slender reddish-brown pods that are constricted between seeds, and extrafloral nectaries along leaf rachises attract ants. It is long-lived and supports bees, butterflies, and other insects.
In cultivation, it prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and is drought-tolerant with low maintenance, making it suitable for barrier hedges or erosion control in landscapes; hardy to USDA zones 7–11; propagation by seed (scarify, pre-soak) or by semi-ripe cuttings. This plant provides habitat for pollinators and wildlife, and seeds are used to make pinole in ethnobotanical contexts.
