Summary
Cochliostema odoratissimum is an acaulescent evergreen epiphyte from humid tropical forests of Central and South America, typically growing on trees (occasionally terrestrial) with a large rosette of leaves 0.4–1.2 m long and 10–15 cm wide. It bears ramified axillary inflorescences 25–50 cm long carrying numerous fragrant flowers 4–6 cm in diameter; each flower has three blue-violet sepals (1.5–3 cm) and three similarly sized petals with long-ciliated margins, and a hooded column enclosing spirally twisted anthers. The leaf arrangement forms a tank that collects rainwater and debris, a trait linked to its canopy habitat.
Sources note cultivation in tropical and humid subtropical climates, either on trees or in well-draining aerated organic loam kept constantly humid, using a loose mix such as orchid bark, peat, and perlite with drainage holes. In cultivation, provide bright indirect light, high humidity, and warm temperatures; keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, and water with rainwater or demineralized water. Fertilize with balanced 10-10-10 every two weeks during the growing season and taper in winter; repot every 1–2 years and propagate by division in spring or early summer; prune dead leaves to maintain shape. It is not known to be toxic to pets or humans; humidity can be increased with a humidifier or humidity tray, and direct sun should be avoided to prevent scorching. Uses include ornamental value for its striking form and intensely fragrant flowers.
