Schoenoplectus acutus
A tall, perennial, rhizomatous wetland sedge native to freshwater marshes across North America, forming dense shoreline stands, growing 3 to 9 feet tall, stabilizing soils and providing nesting cover and forage for wildlife, with traditional Indigenous uses for mats, baskets, cordage, and canoes
Common Names
Hardstem Bulrush, Tule, Great Bulrush, Common Tule, Hard-Stem Bulrush, Hard-Stemmed Bulrush
Summary
Hardstem bulrush is a North American wetland plant that forms tall, dense stands with thick, round green stems and brown spikelet clusters, reaching 1–3 meters in height and spreading via rhizomes. It inhabits marshes, swamps, lake shores, and other wetlands, tolerating standing water from 10 cm to over 1.5 meters in fresh or brackish conditions, and has two recognized varieties, var. acutus and var. occidentalis.
Propagation occurs by seed and rhizomes; seeds are wind- and water-dispersed and germinate best on moist bare soil, with installation possible by rhizomes, seedlings, or direct seed. The plant's dense root system stabilizes soils and provides erosion control; dense tule stands offer nesting cover for waterfowl, and seeds feed birds, while roots serve as food for muskrats and beavers. It can resprout after fire and is used in restoration, wetland habitat creation, and wastewater filtration.
