Summary

Spanish moss is an epiphytic bromeliad native to the southern United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. It forms long, pendulous strands with silver-gray foliage that hang from tree limbs and has no true roots, absorbing moisture and nutrients through trichomes on leaves and stems; growth is slow and sprawling, with small green flowers that are rarely noticed when they appear.

It thrives in warm, humid climates with bright, indirect light and good air circulation; outdoors in suitable hardiness zones (USDA 8a–11b) or indoors under trees or pergolas in summer, and requires regular moisture—water by misting or immersion and allow to dry between waterings. It is not parasitic, propagates by division, and can be used for decorative displays, crafts, mulch, and florist applications; serves as a bioindicator of air quality and provides wildlife habitat.
