Summary

Originating in the Western Cape and Little Karoo of South Africa, this small succulent grows about 2 cm tall and up to 10 cm wide, with leaves arranged in two opposite rows that form a fan-like head. Distinctive features include flat, truncated leaf tips with translucent windows that admit light for photosynthesis, and gray-green, thick, near-rectangular leaves. When in bloom, small white tubular flowers appear on long inflorescences.

Care requires bright indirect light with protection from the hottest sun, and well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging; soak-and-dry watering that lets the topsoil dry between waterings is recommended. Repot every 2–3 years into a deeper container; propagation occurs via offsets or seeds, with offsets common. Typical temperatures range from 65–80°F (18–27°C) and it tolerates cool nights but is not frost-tolerant. It is non-toxic to humans and animals and is commonly used as a decorative plant on windowsills and in gardens; watch for mealybugs as a common pest.
