Pineapple Lily is a South African native bulbous perennial that forms a large basal rosette of strap-shaped leaves and sends up upright stems bearing dense pineapple-like flower spikes topped by green bracts, with plants reaching about 0.5–1 m tall.

Growth prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil; plant bulbs about 15 cm deep, mulch in colder areas, and keep soil evenly moist during the growing season while allowing drying during dormancy; it can be grown in containers or borders, and propagation is by seeds or offsets; hardy in warmer climates (zones 8a–11) with showy flower spikes that are suitable for borders, rock gardens, or container plantings; it attracts bees and other pollinators.
