Summary
Juncus ensifolius, commonly called dagger-leaved rush, is a rhizomatous perennial rush native to western North America that forms large upright clumps, reaching about 20–60 cm tall. It has flat, dagger-shaped leaves that fold along the mid-vein toward the stem, and its globular heads carry small green to reddish-brown flowers atop the stems, followed by dark brown to chestnut brown seedheads.
For cultivation, it favors permanently moist, acid soils and can tolerate sun to partial shade, with adaptability to clay or loam and a moisture range from moist to poorly drained. Propagation is by seed in spring or by division from mid-spring to early summer; pruning is optional, tidying after flowering helps maintain appearance. It is generally pest- and disease-free and suitable for landscape uses such as grouping, ground cover, or hedges, and for wetlands restoration, raingardens, and bank stabilization, while also providing wildlife habitat.
