Summary

Iris verna, the Dwarf Iris, is a small, fragrant perennial native to the eastern United States. It forms colonies via deeply buried rhizomes and typically reaches 4 to 7 inches in height and 6 to 10 inches in width, with sword shaped leaves. The violet blue flowers are fragrance rich and sit on very short stems, often appearing stemless, with three standards and three falls, and feature a golden yellow signal on the falls, blooming in early spring. In cultivation, it grows best in sunny to partial shade with moist, acidic, well drained soil and tolerates occasional dryness but not waterlogged conditions. Propagation is by division of rhizomes or by seed, and its hardiness is in USDA zones 5 to 9. The plant forms colonies, making it suitable for borders, woodland or native plantings, and maintenance is generally low, with occasional slug or snail pressure and common issues arising from poor air circulation or overhead watering.
