Appalachian bellflower, also called southern harebell, is native to the eastern United States, especially the Appalachian Mountains, and is a perennial herb with arching, multi-stem growth and slender stems bearing alternate, simple leaves, numerous small, drooping bell-shaped blossoms appearing in loose panicles, blue to purple, pink to red, or white, with five-petaled cup-shaped flowers adding a delicate, bell-like display, habitat includes clearings and rocky woods in dry to well-drained rocky acidic soils, with a preference for filtered shade to full sun, cultivation notes indicate a rocky, well-drained acidic soil and tolerance for drought once established, it is well suited to rock walls, woodland landscapes, and native or drought-tolerant gardens, and may self-seed in appropriate conditions, bloom occurs from July to October, with some flowering continuing into December, the species attracts pollinators, including the Plasterer Bee, sources describe these characteristics as typical of this species
