Summary

Andropogon glomeratus is a perennial bunchgrass native to the eastern United States. It forms dense tufts with upright culms 2–6 ft tall and 2–3 ft wide, with green to blue-green leaves turning coppery-orange in fall, and dense, bushy panicles that are silvery white to pinkish, giving a bushy beard-like appearance. In cultivation it prefers full sun and moist to wet soils and suits native, butterfly, or winter-interest gardens as well as rain gardens and wetlands; it may self-seed and spread, and propagates by seed or division; old foliage can be cut back in late winter to encourage new growth; seeds are eaten by songbirds and small mammals, and the plant serves as a larval host for skipper butterflies.
