Galearis spectabilis
This eastern North American orchid grows in moist woods, reaches about 10 inches in height with two basal leaves, and bears 2–15 flowers whose pink helmet-shaped hood hides a white lip and offers nectar via a spur to pollinators.

Summary
Galearis spectabilis, commonly known as Showy Orchis, is a terrestrial orchid native to eastern Canada and the eastern United States. It is a small herbaceous perennial reaching about 5-20 cm in height with two basal fleshy leaves that persist through summer. An erect flowering stem carries a raceme of 2-12 showy flowers whose pink-magenta sepals and petals form a hood over a white lip, and a conspicuous club-shaped spur behind the lip, with color forms including forma gordinierii (white) and forma willeyi (pink). Flowers appear in spring to early summer in moist, calcareous woodlands, thickets, and old fields and are mildly fragrant, with pollination by bumblebees and seeds produced in upright capsules, germination requiring a compatible mycorrhizal fungus. The plant grows slowly and forms clumps over time via crown offshoots from the rhizome, and its range includes eastern Canada and much of the eastern United States. In cultivation, it prefers partial to full shade and loose, humus-rich soil that is moist but well-drained, with a neutral to acidic pH, and mulching with leaf mold in spring supports moisture and soil structure. It is best left undisturbed once established, as transplantation from the wild is difficult; propagation is possible by division, and seed propagation is possible with mycorrhizal associations, with germination achievable in vitro in gelatin or agar. It is hardy in USDA zones 4-7 and suitable for native woodland gardens and shade plantings, adding spring interest in moist forest settings while tolerating cool summers and avoiding heavy competition.
