Summary

Rhododendron alabamense, commonly called Alabama azalea, is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States, typically reaching 4–6 ft tall and wide. It bears snowy white, tubular flowers with a prominent lemon-yellow blotch on the upper petal, blooming in midseason and emitting a lemony fragrance. Leaves are obovate to elliptic, 1–3 inches long, with hairs on both surfaces, and the plant spreads by underground runners; it is not salt-tolerant and hardy to USDA Zone 6. Cultivation favors partial shade with well-drained acidic soil rich in organic matter (pH roughly 4.5–5.5), and annual mulching to retain moisture. Protect from strong afternoon sun and wind, with east or north exposure often preferred; water thoroughly in summer while avoiding wet, poorly aerated soils, and prune lightly after flowering to promote next year’s buds. Propagation is possible by softwood cuttings or layering, and seeds may be used though can hybridize; landscape uses include understory plantings in woodland or cottage gardens, mass plantings along walkways, and specimen plantings, with good performance in garden settings.
