Phlox subulata, commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox, is a low-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial that forms dense mats of slender needle-like foliage and masses of star-shaped flowers in spring, colors including pink, purple, blue, and white. It grows about 3–6 inches tall and can spread 12–18 inches (up to 2 feet), creating a moss-like carpet ideal for rock gardens, borders, slopes, and ground-cover plantings. Native to the eastern and central United States, it remains evergreen in many climates and provides a bright spring display.

A hardy, sun-loving ground cover, Phlox subulata prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained soil; drought tolerance once established. It is hardy in USDA zones 3–9 and spreads by creeping runners, with propagation by division or cuttings. After flowering, light pruning maintains dense growth and can encourage a second bloom.
