Summary

Hybanthus concolor, commonly called Eastern Green Violet, is a native North American perennial forb in Violaceae that grows from a thick rhizome to form clumps and can reach up to about 1 m tall; stems are erect and hairy, leaves are alternate and simple, and flowers are greenish-white, drooping, borne singly or in small clusters on slender stalks, with some late-season cleistogamous flowers; the oblong capsule fruit splits into three parts to release 6 to 9 seeds. It inhabits shaded, richly vegetated habitats such as deciduous forests, wooded slopes, floodplains, and ravines, often in moist calcareous soils, with blooming typically from April to June. It favors shaded to part shade with moist to mesic soils and forms clonal colonies from rhizomes; in Minnesota it is listed as endangered with only a few populations, while global distribution includes Ontario and many eastern U.S. states and the status is G5 secure; conservation-focused management targets protecting forest habitat and controlling invasive species, and sources do not list specific cultivation or ornamental uses.
