Summary
The rattlesnake plant is an evergreen clump-forming perennial native to humid forests of Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). It grows to about 0.5–0.8 m tall with spear-shaped leaves up to 45 cm long, light green upper surface with dark green zebra-like markings and purple undersides; leaves fold upward at night, earning the nickname prayer plant.
It prefers bright indirect light and warm, humid conditions, avoiding direct sun; keep soil consistently moist in a well-draining mix and use rainwater or distilled water to prevent salt buildup. Maintain temperatures around 18–27°C, high humidity, and fertilize monthly in spring–summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer; repot every 1–2 years and propagate by division in spring. Commonly grown as a houseplant in temperate regions and suitable for patio or container planting; watch for pests such as spider mites.
